Arenal

Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

The damming of Lake Arenal in 1974 flooded the local town, and its inhabitants were relocated to what is known today as La Fortuna. It is said that on a very calm and clear day it is possible to see the roof tops of the old ghost town 27m below the surface of Lake Arenal. Appreciated by international windsurfers taking advantage of the constant wind that sweeps across the western side of the lake, it is also popular with anglers for bass fishing.

One of the most active volcanoes in the world, the flawless silhouette of Arenal Volcano with its loud rumblings and frequent explosions of lava and ash is a sight to behold. The area is also home to some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Beautiful rivers, waterfalls and relaxing thermal spas such as Tabacon Hot Springs are bountiful.

The marshlands of Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge are also worth a visit, particularly in winter with the arrival of spoonbills, heron, jabiru and American storks. Turtles, iguana and crocodiles are also a popular attraction within the reserve.
